Avatar is a band that I really love. There was this grand theatricality and camp to their music that I hadn’t really seen before when I stumbled across them at the ripe old age of fourteen. The makeup, the weird lyrics, the switching from screams to weird jazzy breakdowns. It felt so revolutionary to me. They proceed to make albums set in worlds of their own invention and based on poems they wrote in a way that felt both fantastical and strangely abstract. There’s a sense of creativity that permeates everything they do. It’s made me want to make weirder things and try and make things that play against expectation. Plus they were the first band I ever saw live in concert, so that’s important to me. Smells Like A Freakshow was my favorite song of theirs when I was younger so I put this here, though I could really have put a lot of different songs here.
