Most of the songs I’ve listed are in English. Main nay uss say yeh kaha (I said to him) is one of the exceptions. There aren’t a lot of extreme bands singing in Urdu or Hindi (which I can more or less speak/understand) so I haven’t listened to much beyond the occasional Bollywood hit or a song from Coke Studios. This song is one that my parents listened to a lot when I was a really little kid. It’s a political song based on a poem by the great poet Habib Jalib. I didn’t get the politics of it until I was older, well after I had memorised each word of the song. It’s something that makes me feel connected to home and to my parents, especially given that the music we listen to is so different. I still put it on when I want a chill acoustic song with a bit of humor and lyrics that I will remember till the end of time.
